A historical region of northwest India and northeast Pakistan. Conquered by Moslems in the 4th century, it was part of the Mogul empire after 587 and became an independent kingdom in 75. The British pacified the region in 84' and installed a Hindu dynasty, which was overthrown by a Moslem revolt in 947. Continued fighting in the area led to United Nations intervention (949 and 9'5) and the current partition of the region between India and Pakistan.
