   1. 古漢語注音方法,用兩個字注讀另一個字,例如“塑,桑故切(或桑故反)”。被切字的聲母跟反切上字相同(“塑”字聲母跟“桑”字聲母相同,都是s),被切字的韻母和字調(diào)跟反切下字相同(“塑”字的韻母的字調(diào)跟“故”相同,都是u韻母,都是去聲) a traditional method of indicating the pronunciation of a Chinese character by using two other Chinese characters,the first having the same consonant as the given character and the second having the same vowel (with or without final nasal) and tone

反切 (fǎn qiè)

1. 古人切語之法，用二字以求一字之音，上字與所切之字雙聲，下字與所切之字疊韻；上字以定清濁，下字以定平上去入；如「東，德紅切」、「反，甫晚切」。
